דגר = אסף וקיבץ .
קורא הוא עוף ממשפחת הפסיוניים; נקבות הקורא מטילות ביצים רבות, ולפעמים כמה נקבות מטילות ביצים באותו קן; לכן, הן מצליחות לחמם רק ביצים מעטות, ורק מעט ביצים בוקעות (ע"פ דעת מקרא) , " "הקורא זהה לעוף Ammoperdix הנפוץ בנגב ובעמק הירדן. באזורים הים תיכוניים שבארץ מחליף את הקורא עוף קרוב לו, הכוונה לחגלה, הקרויה גם תרנגולת הסלעים. לדעתי לשני עופות אלה מתייחס השם קורא, שבא להם על שם קריאת הזכרים כמין קריאת התרנגול, שאף הוא קרובם. השבעים תרגמו "קורא" – perdix וכוונתם לעופות אלה, ששמם patridge באנגלית. בהכרת אורח חייהם של הקורא והחגלה פתרון למשל של ירמיהו קרֵא דָגַר וְלא יָלָד. נקבת הקורא מטילה כרגיל 14-10 ביצים בסבך שיחים או בנקיק סלע. וכבר העיר ד"ר ישראל אהרוני ז"ל כי מצא בתוך קן אחד של קורא שלושים ביצה. גם אני מצאתי לפני שנים אחדות קן של חגלה בסביבות עין כרם ובו שלושים ושתים ביצה, שעובריהם התחילו להתפתח אבל מתו באיבם (קן זה על ביציו שמור בבית הטבע שבבית הספר החקלאי בעין כרם, שם שימשתי בהוראה). מסתבר כי יש ושתי נקבות דוגרות אתת ליד השנייה, אך אחת מהן משתלטת על הקן כולו, מגרשת את חברתה ומנסה לדגור על הביצים כולן. אבל גופה קטן מדי כדי לחמם מספר כה רב של ביצים; העוברים מתים והדוגרת נאלצת לעוזבם. לכך נתכוון המשל על "קרֵא דָגַר וְלא יָלָד", שהוא דוגר על ביצים שלא הטיל, "בַּחֲצִי יָמָו יָמָיו יַעַזְבֶנּוּ" – באשר אף אחת מהביצים לא תתפתח לאפרוח. כך הגוזל רכוש הזולת, שסופו שאינו זוכה ליהנות לא מן הגזל ואף לא מרכושו הוא" " ( משלי טבע וחקלאות בספר ירמיהו וישעיהו / פרופסור יהודה פליקס ) .
בפסוק זה יש משל ונמשל:
קורא דגר = עושה עושר: הקורא, שאוסף ביצים לקן שלו, דומה לאדם שאוסף כסף ורכוש;
ולא ילד = ולא במשפט: הקורא, שאוסף ביצים שלא הוא ילד, דומה לאדם שאוסף כסף ורכוש שאינם שייכים לו ע"פ המשפט.
והתוצאה:
בחצי ימיו יעזבנו = הקורא נאלץ לעזוב את הביצים באמצע תקופת הדגירה, וגם האדם יצטרך לעזוב את עושרו (או להיפך – עושרו יעזוב אותו) באמצע החיים.
ובאחריתו יהיה נבל = הקורא יהיה נוֹבֵל, עייף ומותש מכך שדגר על ביצים רבות שרובן לא בקעו; וגם האדם יהיה בסוף ימיו עייף ומותש מרדיפה אחרי עושר שלא הצליח ליהנות ממנו.
