העולם ואני

אִם רַק אֲנִי הָיִיתִי עָצוּב

וְהָעוֹלָם שָׂמֵח

הָיִיתִי מְמַהֵר אֵלָיו

ְואֶת חֶלְקִי לוֹקֵחַ

אם הָעוֹלָם הָיָה עָצוּב

וְרַק אֲנִי שָׂמֵחַ

הָיִיתִי מַזְמִינוֹ אֵלַי

וְאֶת דַּלְתִּי פּוֹתֵחַ

אַךְ לָעוֹלָם וְלִי אָבוּד

וְזוֹ עוּבְדָה חוֹתֶכֶת

שֶלָּעוֹלָם אֵין לְאָן לָבוֹא

וְלִי אֵין לְאָן לָלֶכֶת.

The world and I

If all the world was full of joy
and I alone in sorrow
I'd reach out for my share of joy
before another morrow.

But if the world was on the rocks
and I alone in clover
I'd open wide my door and bid
the sorry world come over.

But since the world and I are lost
In wretchedness past knowing
There's no place for the world to come
and no Place for my going
