My daughter plays on the floor 
\nwith plastic letters, 
\nred, blue & hard yellow, 
\nlearning how to spell, 
\nspelling, 
\nhow to make spells. <\/p>\n

I wonder how many women 
\ndenied themselves daughters, 
\nclosed themselves in rooms, 
\ndrew the curtains 
\nso they could mainline words. <\/p>\n

A child is not a poem, 
\na poem is not a child. 
\nthere is no either\/or. 
\nHowever. <\/p>\n

I return to the story 
\nof the woman caught in the war 
\n& in labour, her thighs tied 
\ntogether by the enemy 
\nso she could not give birth. <\/p>\n

Ancestress: the burning witch, 
\nher mouth covered by leather 
\nto strangle words. <\/p>\n

A word after a word 
\nafter a word is power. <\/p>\n

At the point where language falls away 
\nfrom the hot bones, at the point 
\nwhere the rock breaks open and darkness 
\nflows out of it like blood, at 
\nthe melting point of granite 
\nwhen the bones know 
\nthey are hollow & the word 
\nsplits & doubles & speaks 
\nthe truth & the body 
\nitself becomes a mouth. <\/p>\n

This is a metaphor. <\/p>\n

How do you learn to spell? 
\nBlood, sky & the sun, 
\nyour own name first, 
\nyour first naming, your first name, 
\nyour first word.<\/font><\/p>\n
