Men and women emerge from cars<\/span><\/p>\n

In threes, and twos<\/span><\/p>\n

Shading their eyes against the sun<\/span><\/p>\n

With hesitant hands<\/span><\/p>\n

The irony of arms prematurely raised<\/span><\/p>\n

In a farewell salute<\/span><\/p>\n

And not even the darkest glasses<\/span><\/p>\n

Can offset the blinding glare<\/span><\/p>\n

Of rows of granite slabs<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

At their wedding<\/span><\/p>\n

He lifted her bridal veil<\/span><\/p>\n

And she drank from the outstretched cup<\/span><\/p>\n

His loved pulsed through the wine<\/span><\/p>\n

That trickled down her throat<\/span><\/p>\n

A month after his death<\/span><\/p>\n

The veil is lifted from his resting place<\/span><\/p>\n

Her arms hang motionless at her sides<\/span><\/p>\n

And her tears are as silent<\/span><\/p>\n

As his name engraved in the stone<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

A beggar paces among the mourners<\/span><\/p>\n

Waiting for the ceremony to end<\/span><\/p>\n

He hopes the void created by their loss<\/span><\/p>\n

Will give cause to fill his outstretched cup<\/span><\/p>\n

In another section of the cemetery<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A tractor moves earth, preparing more plots<\/span><\/p>\n

The noise of the grinding motor<\/span><\/p>\n

Muffles the sounds<\/span><\/p>\n

Of the father reciting Kaddish<\/span><\/p>\n

And the mother's heartbroken wails<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

One little girl<\/span><\/p>\n

Upset, or perhaps bored <\/span><\/p>\n

By so many adults engrossed in solemn prayer<\/span><\/p>\n

Wanders to curiously gaze upon flowers<\/span><\/p>\n

And the intricate carvings <\/span><\/p>\n

On the rows of granite slabs<\/span><\/p>\n

She searches the faces of the mourners<\/span><\/p>\n

For her father<\/span><\/p>\n

To ask him when this will all be over<\/span><\/p>\n

And when he will take her home<\/span><\/p>\n

But then she remembers<\/span><\/p>\n

That it's his name engraved in the stone<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
