Surburg,  <\/span>Raymond F:  <\/span>"The Influence of the Two Delitzsches  <\/span>on Biblical and Near Eastern Studies", Concordia, Theological Quarterly,  <\/span>Vol. 47, Number 3, July 1983, "The nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth saw the appearance of a father and son on the stage of European Biblical studies both of whom exercised a considerable influence upon the theological and philological thinking of many scholars, pastors, and lay people. They were Franz Delitzsch (1813-1890) and Friedrich Delitzsch ( 1850- 1922). Their lives present many interesting parallels and also exhibit many contrasts relative to their attitude toward Hebrew, the Old Testament, and the New Testament. Both men were also interested in Near Eastern Studies; the son probably contributed more in the arena of Near Eastern studies than did the father, while the latter's literary and teaching efforts were much more important than his son's in the disciplines of Biblical interpretation.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The implication of the new picture of indigenous Late Bronze Age Canaanite origins for the majority of the early Israelite population is clear. Not only is there no archaeological evidence for an exodus, there is no need to posit such an event<\/em>. There are, no doubt, theological problems that this negative evidence presents, but I leave such problems to others. I would only observe in passing that if one regards the biblical accounts as story rather than history (I. e., as literature), amenable to literary analysis, then the task of critical scholarship perhaps becomes more manageable.  <\/span>That is, one need not pose <\/u>the question of historicity but simply of the formation and transmission of a literary tradition<\/em>. ($) In this case, it is principally the Joshua tradition – one of mass migration and external military con­flict – that we must confront, since the alternate account in Judges presupposes no such conquest. Indeed, it offers a realistic portrait of sedentarization and gradual assimilation of the Israelites over a period of as long as two centuries.<\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

If one asks why the Israelite historiographers preserved two diamet­rically opposed versions of their own history, we can at least offer new critical approaches that may prove constructive. Recent structuralist analyses, such as those of Polzin,  <\/span>Gottwald, and others, have suggested that the redactors of the later, dominant Deuteronomic tradition were fully aware of the radically divergent nature of the Joshua and Judges materials they incorporated, but they left them in tension in a deliber­ately dialectic manner. … <\/font><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The fact is that most ancient peoples contrived origin myths for them­selves that were later incorporated into national epics, despite their some­times fantastical character, as did the Greeks and others<\/span><\/em>. ($)  <\/span>In the case of the Israelite historiographers, it is possible that oral tradition had preserved the memory of Canaanite groups in Egypt during the Hyksos period and their subsequent expulsion. If that were the case, it would have been easy to connect these events, as well as others down into the XIXth Dynasty, with the prehistory of Israel. The tenth century B.C.E.-when the literary traditions of the J and E narra­tives of the Pentateuch were crystallizing-would have provided an ideal Sitz im Leben <\/em>for incorporating Egyptian motifs into the Hebrew national epic. On the other hand, … Egyptian motifs in the biblical accounts of the Exodus would fit best in the Saite, or Persian, period (c. fifth century B.C.E.) and perhaps only then. In that case, the entire Exodus tradition would have to be assigned to the P (or Priestly) source of redactors, who shaped the final version of the Pentateuch precisely in the Persian period<\/em>.($). <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

In this con­nection, it is worth remembering that many biblical scholars have long held that only the House of Joseph, or elements of the later tribes of Benjamin and Judah, which have disproportionately shaped the later literary tradition in the Hebrew Bible, were ever in Egypt. Ancient Israel's problem … was the same as ours; how to account for the unique reality of the peo­ple of Israel? The biblical writers fell back on the only analogy they had, historical experience, which for them was their own firsthand knowledge of the power of Yahweh over their pagan neighbors and his ability to save and shape them as his people – despite their obscure origins, their lack of merit, and their disobedience. In the end, the biblical writers concluded that Israel's election was nothing less than a miracle, and who are we, their spiritual heirs, to disagree?
