\nFor Exposition of the Plot.
\nHe timidly voiced his conjecture.
\nThe Corpse assented heartily —
\n(He once, he said, had taught AP) —
\nAnd straightway started in to lecture:
\n"The Werewolf, in a former sense,
\nImplies the Arewolf (present tense),
\nThe Havebeenwolf (long past, you see),
\nAnd Willbewolf, (futurity)."
\nThis learning pleased the Werewolf well,
\nBut he continued: "Can you tell
\nMe, what is my subjunctive, please?"
\nThe question caused distinct unease.
\nThe teacher therefore gulped, and hissed:
\n"Werewolves, my good sir, don't exist,"
\nBade him, "Good evening," rather stuffily,
\nAnd slammed his coffin cover huffily.
\nThis stern decree of Nature's Laws
\nGave (so to speak) the Werewolf pause.
\nHe had a wife and child, you know.
\nHe shook his head, and turned to go.
\nHe went like one that Fate did slam
\nWith Love betrayed, or "Rent Due" letter,
\nBut stopped in at "The Slaughtered Lamb",
