A Werewolf, troubled by his name,<\/font><\/span>
\nLeft wife and brood one night and came<\/span>
\nTo a hidden graveyard to enlist<\/span>
\nThe aid of a long-dead philologist.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

"Oh sage, wake up, please don't berate me,"<\/font><\/span>
\nHe howled sadly, "Just conjugate me."<\/span>
\nThe seer arose a bit unsteady<\/span>
\nYawned twice, wheezed once, and then was ready.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

"Well, `Werewolf' is your plural past,<\/font><\/span>
\nWhile `Waswolf' is singularly cast:<\/span>
\nThere's `Amwolf' too, the present tense,<\/span>
\nAnd `Iswolf,' `Arewolf' in this same sense."<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

"I know that–I'm no mental cripple–<\/font><\/span>
\nThe future form and participle<\/span>
\nAre what I crave," the beast replied.<\/span>
\nThe scholar paused–again he tried:<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

"A `Will-be-wolf?' It's just too long:<\/font><\/span>
\n`Shall-be-wolf?' `Has-been-wolf?' Utterly wrong!<\/span>
\nSuch words are wounds beyond all suture–<\/span>
\nI'm sorry, but you have no future."<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

The Werewolf knew better–his sons still slept<\/font><\/span>

Dem Werwolf schmeichelten die Fälle,<\/font><\/span>
\ner rollte seine Augenbälle.<\/span>
\n»Indessen«, bat er, »füge doch<\/span>
\nzur Einzahl auch die Mehrzahl noch!«<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Der Dorfschulmeister aber mußte<\/font><\/span>
\ngestehn, dass er von ihr nichts wußte.<\/span>
\nZwar Wölfe gäbs in grosser Schar,<\/span>
\ndoch »Wer« gäbs nur im Singular.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Der Wolf erhob sich tränenblind–<\/font><\/span>
\ner hatte ja doch Weib und Kind!<\/span>
\nDoch da er kein Gelehrter eben,<\/span>
\nso schied er dankend und ergeben.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Werewolf one time burned for knowledge,<\/span>

Among the local graves, and sought
\n The tomb of that most noble creature,
\n A Public High School English teacher,
\n For Exposition of the Plot. <\/span><\/p>\n

He timidly voiced his conjecture.
\n The Corpse assented heartily —
\n (He once, he said, had taught AP) —
\n And straightway started in to lecture:<\/span><\/p>\n

"The Werewolf, in a former sense, <\/span>
\n <\/span>Implies the Arewolf (present tense), <\/span>
\n <\/span>The Havebeenwolf (long past, you see),<\/span>
\n <\/span>And Willbewolf, (futurity)." <\/span><\/p>\n

This learning pleased the Werewolf well,
\n But he continued: "Can you tell
\n Me, what is my subjunctive, please?"
\n The question caused distinct unease. <\/span><\/p>\n

The teacher therefore gulped, and hissed:
\n "Werewolves, my good sir, don't exist,"
\n Bade him, "Good evening," rather stuffily,
\n And slammed his coffin cover huffily. <\/span><\/p>\n

This stern decree of Nature's Laws
\n Gave (so to speak) the Werewolf pause.
\n He had a wife and child, you know.
\n He shook his head, and turned to go. <\/span><\/p>\n

He went like one that Fate did slam
\n With Love betrayed, or "Rent Due" letter,
\n But stopped in at "The Slaughtered Lamb",
\n And ate a tourist, and felt better. <\/span><\/p>\n
